EASTERN EUROPE, Imitations of Thasos. Circa 90-75 BC. AR Tetradrachm (32mm, 16.87 g, 11h). ‘Verwilderung von Koph und Legende’ (Degraded head and legend) type. Mint in the lower Danube region. Head of young Dionysos right, wearing ivy wreath / Herakles standing facing, head left, holding club in right hand, lion’s skin draped over left arm; monogram to inner left. Lukanc, Les imitations Précoces, 37 (same obv. die, rev. monogram unrecorded); OTA Klasse II/3; Lanz 962 var. (monogram); KMW –; CCCBM I –. Lightly toned, minor marks. Good VF. Very rare monogram; recorded in Göbl as Klasse II but unrecorded in Lukanc. Lukanc records this obverse die as “Les imitations Précoces” (early imitations).
