CILICIA, Tarsus. Tranquillina. Augusta, AD 241-244. Æ (28mm, 9.83 g, 12h). Struck under Gordian III. Diademed and draped bust right, set on crescent / Altar of Sandan – Sandan standing left on horned lion left within pyramidal monument surmounted by eagle; to either side, small figure wearing Phrygian cap supporting domed canopy; all atop raised platform. RPC VII.2 3150 var. (no crescent); SNG BN 1727-8 var. (same); SNG Levante –. Green patina with earthen highlights, scratches, slight porosity, holed. VF. Unpublished variety with Tranquillina’s bust set on a crescent. This obverse type is known paired with a Dionysos reverse type but an obverse die match could not be found. |
