LYDIA, Mastaura. Philip II. As Caesar, AD 244-247. Æ (22mm, 3.79 g, 6h). Struck under Philip I. Bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Leto advancing left, head right, holding the infants Apollo and Artemis in her outstretched arms. Kurth 86; RPC VIII Online 20382. Earthen brown patina, porosity. Near VF. Rare.

Leto was the divine daughter of two Titans, Koios and Phoebe, and, by Zeus, the mother of the twin deities, Apollo and Artemis. Little is recorded about her in the classical myths, except that, like many mortal women who had caught Zeus’ eye, she incurred the wrath of Hera and had to flee to the island of Delos in order to safely give birth. Although she was more than likely a pre-classical manifestation of the Great Mother of possible Lycian origin, she had no position separate from that of her divine offspring. Consequently, she was only seen in conjunction with them.
