JUDAEA, Sebaste. Aquilia Severa. Augusta, 220-221 CE & 221-222. Æ (22mm, 6.97 g, 6h). Struck under Elagabalus. Draped bust right / Winged sphinx seated left, right forepaw on wheel; above, radiate head left. RPC VI Online 8905; Rosenberger 38; Sofaer 40; Dow, ACTTB, p. 149 (this coin). Earthen green patina, overstruck on a coin of Caracalla with a temple clearly visible on the obverse. Near VF.
From the Joseph A. Dow Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 208 (8 April 2009), lot 348.
The temple style which is present on the obverse of this coin was used on the reverse of only one unique coin during Elagabalus’ reign. It is more likely that this coin was overstruck on a circulating coin of Caracalla, who struck a couple of versions of this reverse type.
The present coin is published in Joseph A. Dow, Ancient Coins Through the Bible (Mustang, OK: Tate, 2011), in the chapter The Herodian Period. CNG is pleased to offer coins from the collection of the author here, and in subsequent electronic auctions.
Closing Date and Time: 29 April 2026 at 13:36:20 ET.
All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
