JUDAEA, Gaza. temp. Hadrian. 117-138 CE. Æ (15mm, 3.60 g, 12h). Dually dated epidemia 2 and CY 191 (130/1 CE). Minos standing left, holding spear and branch / Sycamore tree; mem to right; B EΠ (date) in legend. Farhi, Gaza 21; RPC III 4022; Rosenberger 34 var. (date); Sofaer 79. Earthen green patina. Near VF.

Yashin identifies the tree as the sycamore tree of Gortyna on Crete. According to myth, it was under this tree that Zeus abducted Europa, later bearing three sons, the eldest being Minos. The iconography on this rare coin symbolizes the connection between Gaza and the Phoenician settlements on Crete, and more specifically, Gaza’s city god Marnas’ similarity to Zeus.
