JUDAEA, Gaza. Hadrian. 117-138 CE. Æ (19mm, 6.05 g, 12h). Dually dated epidemia 2 and CY 191 (130/1 CE). Laureate bust right, drapery on left shoulder / Herakles standing facing, head right, leaning on club to left, lion’s skin draped over left arm; mem to right; B (date) in legend. Farhi, Gaza 20 = Dow, ACTTB, p. 42 (this coin); RPC III 4021; Rosenberger 53 var. (date, bust); Sofaer 72 var. (same). Dark brown patina with earthen highlights. VF. Rare.

Hadrian visited Gaza more than once, and it was upon such a visit in AD 128 that an additional reckoning date, that of the επιδημία (imperial visit), was added. The epidemia dating system ceased upon this death in 138.
