CAPPADOCIA, Caesarea-Eusebia. Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. Æ Unit (21.5mm, 10.92 g, 12h). Laureate head right; c/m: LXVI (Legio XV Apollinaris) within rectangular incuse / Mount Argaeus. For c/m: Howgego 741. Earthen red-brown patina. Host near Fine, c/m VF. Rare legionary countermark.
Legio XV Apollinaris had an already storied history before being sent to help against the Parthians when war broke out in AD 115. They aided Legio XXX Ulpia Victrix in Mespotamia and settled in Armenia, building a new headquarters in Satala. Commodus struck a series of coins with their legionary number and sigil for circulation locally, and all are relatively rare. Coins with their countermark can be found stamped on other locally produced coinage, primarily in Cappadocia.
