BOEOTIA, Thespiae. Domitian. AD 81-96. Æ (16.5mm, 4.38 g, 5h). Laureate head right / Aphrodite(?) standing right, holding bird(?); to right, fountain(?). BCD Boeotia 619b = RPC II 271.2 (this coin); BMC –; NCP –. Brown patina, slight roughness. Good Fine. Extremely rare, one of two recorded in RPC.

From the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection. Ex BCD Collection (Triton IX, 10 January 2006), lot 619b.

BCD’s description of the reverse is simply: “Female standing right, holding flower or bird”, RPC adds the altar to right. In this cataloger’s opinion, the bird in hand is clear, perhaps the altar is actually a fountain making the reverse deity Aphrodite, a common motif in Hellenistic times for this city.
