EASTERN EUROPE, Imitations of Alexander III of Macedon. 3rd-2nd centuries BC. AR Drachm (17.5mm, 3.76 g, 12h). Mint in the lower Danube region. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion’s skin headddress / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; monogram in left field, Δ below throne. OTA 591/1 corr. var. (in name of Alexander III, no control below throne); cf. Lanz 936 corr. (in name of Alexander III, same obv. die); KMW –; CCCBM I 200. Toned, trace deposits, minor marks. Near VF.

From the James A. Lock Collection.

Most references place this issue under imitations of Philip III, but the name on all published pieces clearly show that the legend is a corruption of the name Alexander, rather than Philip. Nonetheless, such imitative drachms all seem to copy styles prevalent at the main Alexander type drachm mints in northwest Asia Minor, with the present piece having characteristics typical of issues from Kolophon. All of these mints produced issues in the names of both Alexander and Philip, so the imitations do belong together, regardless of the name on each issue.
