Intaglios. ca. 1840. Cased set of Italian plaster intaglio medallions by Thomas Cades, Rome. Each piece with gilt foil edge and yellow paper surrounds, mounted upon a “sea-green” paper background. After the Greek, Roman, and Etruscan, numbered and mounted to one of four stacking wood trays. The inner lid with maker’s label. Some wear to case. Intaglios as made.

From the St. Croix Collection.

During the 1800’s the “Grand Tour” almost always included an extended stop in Rome. There were many dealers who specialized in selling souvenirs to these young travelers. This set would have been taken home from the trip to help further the education of the purchaser

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
