Alexius I Comnenus. 1081-1118. AV Hyperpyron (30mm, 4.29 g, 7h). Thessalonica mint. Struck 1092/3-1118. Christ Pantokrator enthroned facing / Alexius standing facing, wearing crown and chlamys, holding labarum and globus cruciger; manus Dei above. DOC (20l); SB 1925; Dow, ACTTB, p. 312 (this coin). Toned with some luster. Good VF.

The far rarer of the two varieties from Thessalonica with Alexius’ name appearing at the end of the obverse legend. Both references cite the same two examples in Istanbul. The present coin is published in Joseph A. Dow, Ancient Coins Through the Bible (Mustang, OK: Tate, 2011), in the chapter The Byzantine Empire.
