Michael III "the Drunkard", with Theodora and Thecla. 842-867. AR Miliaresion (23.5mm, 2.10 g, 1h). Constantinople mint. Struck 842-856. Cross potent set on three steps / Legend in five lines. DOC 5; SB 1690. Toned, some find patina, hairline scratches. Good VF.
This coin belongs to the period of Theodora’s regency over Michael from 842-856. Michael later became entangled in a palace intrigue in which he conspired with his uncle Bardas to remove his mother’s regency. On this issue, Michael’s sister Thecla is also cited. This issue is not commonly encountered and provides an opportunity to acquire a coin from the early period of Michael’s reign with Theodora and Thecla apart from their very rare issue of solidi.
