EGYPT, Alexandria. Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ Dichalkon (14mm, 2.22 g, 12h). ‘Coins probably incorrectly attributed to Caligula’. Dated CY 21 (10/9 BC). Ibis standing right / Crocodile standing left, wearing solar disc; L KA (date) in exergue. Köln –; Dattari (Savio) 113 var. (crocodile right); K&G A.5; RPC I 5111; Emmett 4259.21 (R3). Dark brown patina, edge flaws. VF. Rare.

Andrew Burnett, in “The Alexandrian Coinage of Caligula” (D. Gerin, A. Geissen and M. Amandry (eds.), Aegyptiaca serta in Soheir Bakhoum memoriam. Mélanges de numismatique, d’iconographie et d’histoire, 2008) successfully argues that this rare type must have been struck during the reign of Augustus. The date L KA (21) could only have been struck by Augustus or Trajan, and hoard evidence excludes coins dated after AD 121. Stylistically, this coin favors Augustus and a later BC date.
