CAPPADOCIA, Caesarea-Eusebia. Marcus Aurelius. AD 161-180. AR Didrachm (20mm, 6.70 g, 6h). Struck under Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, co-emperors. Dated Cos. III (AD 161-166). Bare head right / Mount Argaeus surmounted by star; in front of mountain, to left; stag standing left; to right, palm tree. Ganschow, Münzen 255a; RPC IV.3 Online 7019; Sydenham, Caesarea 327. Toned, deposits. VF.
Imhoof-Blumer and Sydenham both recognized various designs in front of the base of the mountain but stopped short of cataloging them as different sub-types. The animal on the left is typically either a stag or lion/lioness, standing left or right; a griffin, the emperor on horse back, a hound chasing an antelope(?), and other scenes have also been recorded. The tree on the right has been depicted as a full grown palm tree to a small palm frond. One rare type has a standing figure on the left and the emperor on horseback to right. Some types feature an ornately blossoming tree with flowering vines between the two rocks. But the overwhelming majority of this series are simply unengraved rocks, or worn to the point of having imperceptible features. This series could become an interesting collecting theme to the trained eye.
