ARGOLIS, Argos. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ Diassarion (23.5mm, 6.47 g, 9h). Struck circa AD 198-201. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Pallas Athena standing right, holding transverse spear and round shield. Flament & Marchetti SS.a/PN.2; BCD Peloponnesos 1212.3; BMC –; NCP p. 39, 22 (L. Verus). Earthen green patina, minor deposits. Near VF. Extremely rare.

Pausanias notes “The Athene of the coin seems an interesting record of the archaic statue of Dipoenus and Scyllis, whom Pliny gives to the 50th Olymiad, and who were among the first to produce national Greek types of various divinities. The present coin type represents a figure of Athene retaining the pose of the still older Palladia, but far more refined in detail. The helmet is larger, the aegis on the breast worked out; folds appear in the chiton, and the feet are articulate.”
