EASTERN EUROPE, Imitations of Philip II of Macedon. 3rd century BC. AR Tetradrachm (22mm, 14.30 g, 9h). ‘Unvollständiger Legende’ type. Mint in the lower Danube region. Laureate head of Zeus right; behind, oval shield (or laurel leaf) / Nude youth, holding palm and reins, on horseback right; below, floral ornament. OTA 14/5 var. (no shield, diff. controls); Lanz 353 var. (same); KMW 976 var. (same obv. die, diff. controls); CCCBM I 9 var. (with shield, diff. controls). Light porosity, reverse scrape, test cut on edge. VF. Very rare variety.

This obverse type is known to have either a horizontal shield or crescent behind Zeus’ head on the obverse, although not described in any of the primary references. The type without an obverse control mark is also known, and is more common than the type with a control.
