The first cathedral dedicated to Saint Maurice in Tours was built in the 4th century AD. After the original structure burned in 558, the basilica was rebuilt by Bishop Gregory at the south west corner of the old Roman walls, incorporating portions of the ruins into the cathedral entrance. A new structure was begun in the 12th century, ultimately being completed in the late 14th century and rededicated to Saint Gatianus.
