Didius Julianus. AD 193. Æ Sestertius (27.5mm, 16.73 g, 6h). Rome mint. Laureate head right / Concordia standing left, holding a signum in each hand. RIC IV 14; Banti 1. Dark brown and green surfaces, smoothed and tooled. Near VF.
From the CLV collection formed in the 1970s and 80s.
This reverse legend has been tooled to read CONCORDIA E MILITVM rather than the more likely original reading of CONCO R D MILIT. Cf. Elsen 156, 559 for what is likely another example of this reverse die and its original rev. legend spacing. The reverse legend of Banti 3 was read as CONCORDIA MILITVM. However, with the majority of the rev. legend off flan, this is a highly unlikely reading. What does appear present at the end of the rev. legend is a T making a correct reading of MILIT more likely. As such, Banti 3 is likely read in error.
