PHRYGIA, Hierapolis. Fabius Maximus. Proconsul, 10-9 BC. Æ (14mm, 3.41 g, 12h). Dorykanos, son of Dioskourides, magistrate. Struck under Augustus, 10/9 BC. Paullus Fabius Maximus was born around 46 BC. A member of the illustrious patrician gens Fabia, he went on to become one of the leading men of the Augustan age. He was married to Marcia, the daughter of a half-brother of Augustus, a friend and patron of his. He first served as quaestor Augusti and traveled with the emperor during his tour of the eastern provinces from 22-19 BC. He later was honored as suffect consul in 11 BC, and shortly after that as proconsul of Asia. It was in this role that he struck coins bearing his name and portrait at Hierapolis. Just a few years later, his brother Africanus Fabius Maximus was made proconsul of Africa and also struck coins bearing his name and visage (e.g. RPC I 781).

Juvenal later wrote that he was one of the leading patrons of the arts in his day. He is named in a poem of Horace, and he commissioned a wedding song composed by Ovid.
