Apameia was originally founded by the Seleucid king Antiochos I Soter in the third century BC at the Meandros river. It was named after the king’s mother, Apama, a Persian princess and wife of Alexander’s general Seleukos. The city was settled by people transplanted from the nearby Phrygian town of Kelainai which had been destroyed by frequent earthquakes. Kelainos was a son of Poseidon and hero/founder of the city.
