SAMARIA, “Middle Levantine” Series(?). Circa 375-333 BC. AR Obol (9.5mm, 0.71 g, 8h). Herakles, wearing lion skin, in fighting stance right, holding club overhead in right hand, bow extended before him in left hand / Lion standing right, head facing; star(?) above. CNG E-85, lot 266 var.; CNG E-572, lot 412 var.; CNG E-201, lot 113 var.; VAuctions 274, lot 25 var. (all with lion left); otherwise, unpublished in the standard references. Remnants of find patina, granular and lightly rough surfaces. VF. Very rare.

The first two offerings of this type attributed the coin to possibly Myriandros in Cilicia, based on a lose similarity of the reverse type to SNG Levante 189–90. However, the obverse is clearly an imitation of the canonical type found on the coins of Kition on Cyprus. The hybrid nature of the types here, on an obol, is typical of many issues struck in Samaria, which is a more likely origin for the present issue.
