KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (29mm, 16.32 g, 12h). Uncertain mint in Thrace (Kabyle?). Struck under Skostokos, circa 285-281 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; herm to inner left. Fischer-Bossert, Lysimacheier 22a (V6/R19 – this coin); Thompson –; Müller 85; cf. HGC 3, 1750 (for type); Dow, ACTTB, p. 101 (this coin). Faintly toned, areas of roughness and porosity, overstruck on a tetradrachm of Alexander III of Macedon. VF.

From the Joseph A. Dow Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 60 (22 May 2002), lot 473; Stack’s (4 December 2001), lot 86.

While previous scholars viewed Skostokos as a dynast who took control of parts of Thrace following Lysimachos’ death, Fischer-Bossert’s die study demonstrates that Skostokos was most likely a local ruler in the vicinity of Kabyle, under Lysimachos, who was permitted to strike these coins near the end of Lysimachos’ reign.

The present coin is published in Joseph A. Dow, Ancient Coins Through the Bible (Mustang, OK: Tate, 2011), in the chapter The Greek Empire. CNG is pleased to offer coins from the collection of the author here, and in subsequent electronic auctions.
