ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. Circa 2nd-3rd centuries AD. Æ (12.5mm, 1.22 g, 12h). Α ΔΡΙΑ, draped bust of Mên right, wearing Phrygian cap, set on crescent / CЄ ΒΑC, cock standing right. Unpublished. Earthen dark green patina. VF. Extremely rare.
From the J. Okun-Dubitsky Collection.
It is difficult to ascertain where and when this coin was minted. Based on the style, devices, and fabric this coin was most likely struck somewhere in Asia Minor in the 2nd or 3rd century AD. Perhaps the legends are short for Adrianos Sebastos, referring to the emperor Hadrian, or perhaps they refer to a city named after him or Augustus, a Hadrianopolis or Sebastopolis for example. Perhaps both, and the coin is from Hadrianopolis-Sebaste in Phrygia. It is not a stylistic match to any known coins from that city, however, and coins of this size are not known from there. Mên/Cock types are prevalent in Pisidian Antioch, but that city only struck coins as a Roman colony that feature Latin legends exclusively.
