LYCIA, Phaselis. 5th-4th centuries BC. AR Hemiobol (6.5mm, 0.51 g). Astragalos / Owl standing right, head facing, within incuse square. Heipp-Tamer –; Brindley 472 (Mallos); otherwise, unpublished. Toned, granular surfaces, slightly off center. VF. Very rare.

This anepigraphic hemiobol issue is known with two varieties, differentiated by the owl standing right (the present coin) or left (cf. Nomos Obolos 30, lot 432), and also as an obol, with the owl standing facing with wings spread (cf. CNG E-575, lot 152). Prior attributions of the type to Mallos appear to be solely based on the obverse type, which is a symbol common to Mallos. However, the obol is likely related to a later issue of the same type with the ethnic of Phaselis (Heipp-Tamer 80), making the attribution of the anepigraphic issues to that city almost certain.
