SCOTLAND. Alexander III. 1249-1286. AR Penny (17mm, 1.13 g, 2h). First coinage. Long Cross and Stars, type VIII. Berwick mint; Walter, moneyer. Struck 1250-circa 1280. Crowned head left; scepter to left / + WALTЄ ON BЄR (mint name retrograde), voided long cross; stars in quarters (4 stars of 6 points). Burns 10/12 (figs. 86/88; same obv./rev. dies); cf. SCBI 35 (Ashmolean & Hunterian), 167 (for retrograde rev. legend); SCBC 5048; CNG 574, lot 967 (same dies; hammer $375). Toned, some porosity, slightly off center. Near VF. Rare reverse variety.
