Elephant standing right; CARIN[A] (partially retrograde) below / Emblems of the pontificate: apex, securis, aspergillum, and simpulum. Reding 12, 111-117; Scheers, Traité 162, classe II; RPC I 502. Brown patina. VF. Rare.

On the orders of Julius Caesar in 45 BC, Gaius Carinas was sent to Hispania to eliminate that last remnants of the the Pompeii line, the Republicans Sextus and Gnaeus Pomeius. He was unsuccessful, Sextus and Gnaeus managed to escape. Despite his loss, he was appointed consul, then governor of Spain. In 31 BC he was made governor of Gaul where he successfully defended against the Morini and Suebi tribes, he was honored with a triumph in 29 BC.
