Constans II. 641-668. AR Eighth Siliqua – 30 Nummi (10.5mm, 0.23 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck circa 648-circa 650/651. Crowned facing bust, wearing short beard and chlamys / Cruciform (Rm) monogram. DOC (80a) (Constantine IV); MIB 75 (Constantine IV); cf. Aue, Silbermünzen, R.3 (for similar); M. D. O’Hara, “A Find of Byzantine Silver from the Mint of Rome for the Period A.D. 641-752” in SNR 64 (1985), p. 121, 3a; SB 1125A. Toned, find patina. EF. Extremely rare bust variety of a very rare issue.

From the James A. Lock Collection.

While the O’Hara type 3’s (beardless) are available from time to time (though still very rare), the type 3a is virtually unobtainable and was known from only a single example in the cited hoard. Likely from a brief transitional issue.
