Constantine II. As Caesar, AD 316-337. Æ Follis (19.5mm, 3.62 g, 7h). Treveri (Trier) mint, 2nd officina. Struck under Constantine I, AD 322-323. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust left, holding Victory on banded globe right and resting hand on hilt of parazonium / Banded globe set on altar inscribed VOT/IS/ XX in three lines; three stars above; •STR•. RIC VII 382 corr. (bust type); Mazzini 23a (this coin). Attractive dark brown patina with some verdigris and toned trace silvering, flan crack. EF.
From the David Chapman Collection. Ex Property of Princeton Economics acquired by Martin Armstrong (Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 275, 7 March 2012), lot 169. Ex Peus 357 (28 October 1998), lot 1074; Giuseppe Mazzini Collection (publ. 1957).
This somewhat confusing bust type as been repeatedly miscataloged in the past. While the bust has features of the trabea (as also occurs at the London mint for this period) it more importantly has the pteryges of a cuirass. As such, this bust type should be considered to be laureate, draped (albeit ornately with trabeate features), and cuirassed. Furthermore, it is unlikely that the object in Constantine’s left hand is a mappa as is sometimes suggested. Rather, it is more likely the hilt of a parazonium or sword/dagger.
