KINGS of LYDIA. temp. Walwetes (Alyattes) II (Ardys) – Walwetes (Alyattes) III. Late 640s-early 6th centuries BC. EL Myshemihekte – Twenty-fourth Stater (6mm, 0.69 g). Lydo-Milesian standard. Uncertain mint in Ionia. Head of roaring lion left / Incuse square. Hilbert, Bermerkungen 26–7 (A18/P5); Spier pp. 332–3, unlisted issue, but rev. die P5; Kurth –; SNG Kayhan 1529 (same die and punch). Slightly off center on obverse. Good Fine. Rare.

Hilbert’s die study links this reverse punch not only to issues from Miletos, but also the lion-paw fractions that have been attributed to the Mermnad kings of Lydia, and the boar head issues that J. Spier attributed to Lydia (in Studies Price). Hilbert suggests that the coins were struck from a mint in Ionia that had close relations with Lydia, possibly Ephesos.
