ISLANDS off IONIA, Chios. Circa 525-510 BC. AR Hemistater (12.5mm, 4.02 g). Sphinx, with curved wing, seated right / Incuse square. Mavrogordato –; N. Hardwick, The coinage of Chios from the sixth to fourth century B.C. (unpublished DPhil, Oxford, 1991), 14 (same dies); HGC 6, 1123 corr. (sphinx right); Pitchfork 8 (this coin). Deeply toned, with a slight iridescence. Near Fine. Extremely rare, only one example known to Hardwick, none in CoinArchives.
