Laureate head of Claudius right; L A (date) to right / ΜΕΣΣΑΛΙ ΝΑ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒΑΣ, Messalina, veiled, standing left, leaning on column and holding two small figures in outstretched right hand, grain ears with left. Köln 61; Dattari (Savio) 119; K&G 12.1; RPC I 5113; Emmett 74.1. Deep cabinet toning, obverse die shift. Good VF.

The reverse type depicts Valeria Messalina, Claudius’ third wife, in the guise of Demeter. The two small figures in her right hand are identified as Britannicus and Claudia Octavia, her two children by Claudius.
