Maurice Tiberius. 582-602. AV Solidus (22mm, 4.51 g, 6h). Constantinople mint, 2nd officina. Struck 583/4-602. Helmeted, draped, and cuirassed bust facing, holding globus cruciger / Angel standing facing, holding long staff surmounted by staurogram and globus cruciger; B//CONOB. DOC 5b; MIBE 6; SB 478. Toned and lustrous, obverse double struck, reverse rotated double struck, minor obverse die rust, a couple of scratches. Near EF. An attractive and well struck portrait.

While double strikes are not uncommon for Byzantine gold, they are usually minor in nature with shadowing of the details being most commonly seen. This example is widely double struck on both the obverse and reverse. The reverse first strike was roughly 40% off center. The obverse is a rotated double strike. Interestingly, in an attempt to obliterate the understrike, this coin was given a mighty blow resulting in a high relief and well-defined portrait.
