This coin belongs to a somewhat complex series of folles and half folles that Hahn and Metlich identified as belonging to a traveling military mint. Coinage exists for this series (which features identifiably similar style) with mintmarks for the central mints of Constantinople, Nicomedia, and Cyzicus as well as Thessalonica, Carthage, and Rome. The series continues under Tiberius II, adding Antioch (Theoupolis), as well as his successor Maurice Tiberius. The limited find evidence suggests that this coinage does indeed belong to a traveling military mint with the “Thessalonica” marked issues represented by the Balkans, the “ROM” marked issues often found around the environs of Italy, and so forth. This particular half follis is exceptional for the type and is well struck with excellent detail and well preserved.
