MOESIA INFERIOR, Marcianopolis. Macrinus, with Diadumenian as Caesar. AD 217-218. Æ Pentassarion (25mm, 11.99 g, 1h). Pontius Furius Pontianus, legatus Augusti pro praetore. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Macrinus, seen from behind, right vis-à-vis bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust of Diadumenian, seen from behind, left / Moesia seated left, holding three ears of grain and resting right elbow on rocks; below right, hare standing right; to right, Є (mark of value). H&J, Marcianopolis 6.24.5.2 corr. (hare not described); Varbanov 1266 corr. (Elpis, same). Dark green-brown patina, minor die breaks, trace deposits. Good VF. Very rare, one of the finest known.

From the DWBG Collection. Ex William Warden, 2001.

Hristova and Jekov describe the reverse figure as “Demeter (Moesia?),” but neither they, or any of the other references, describe the hare at the base of the rocks. The hare would not be an expected attribute of Demeter but could certainly accompany a local goddess. The hare is a known feature on the coinage of Viminacium in Moesia Superior. Thus, the attribution of this goddess as Moesia seems appropriate.
