'Abbasid Caliphate. al-Rida, heir to the caliphate under al-Ma’mun (died AH 203) . AR Token (22.8mm, 2.50 g). Imitating a dirham of al-Ma’mun citing al-Rida as heir. With mint-name ‘Samarqand’ and date ‘202’. Possibly early 20th century. RIC 256. VF. The obverse and reverse were apparently produced separately and then joined together.

These pieces are believed to be souvenirs made for visitors to the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad. The example published by Miles in RIC was acquired by the ANS in 1922.
