Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (20.5mm, 5.11 g, 1h). Londinium (London) mint. Struck circa AD 287-288. IMP CARAVSIVS P AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / M AR S V ICTOR, Mars, helmeted and wearing military attire, advancing right, holding transverse spear and trophy over shoulder; III. RIC V.5 1977 (this coin cited); Normanby 1582-3 (same rev. die). Dark green patina, a few edge splits and striking fractures. Near VF. Extremely rare. One of only four examples cited in RIC V.5. This coin shares a reverse die with Normanby 1582 and 1583 and is the private collection coin referenced in footnote 1989 in RIC V.5.
