IONIA, Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Elagabalus. AD 218-222. Æ Tetrassarion (17mm, 3.27 g, 6h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Pan standing facing, head left, wearing kalathos, right hand raised to head, holding small animal (hind, hare, or goat) in his lowered right hand; to left, lighted altar. Schultz 228 corr. (V3/R5, rev. description); RPC VI Online 5106 corr. (same); SNG von Aulock 2054. Earthen green patina. Good VF. Extremely rare, only two recorded by Schultz, three in RPC.

Schultz describes the reverse as “Pan with kalathos on his head left, standing before a flaming altar, holding a branch in the raised right, the pedum in the falling left.” RPC does not mention the kalathos. But this coin and the third RPC specimen, Gorny & Mosch 274, lot 2622, clearly show Pan grasping a small animal by the ears or horns. His right hand is empty, reaching towards the kalathos on his head.

Closing Date and Time: 2 July 2025 at 12:29:20 ET.
