ISLANDS off THRACE, Imbrus. Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ (21mm, 9.07 g, 12h). Bare head right; c/m: star with six rays within round incuse / Ithyphallic herm (Hermes Imbrianus) standing right on short base; – in left field (mark of value?); Γ (or monogram) to lower right. RPC I 1738; Varbanov 2992 var. (no Γ in reverse field). For c/m: Howgego 431. Red-brown surfaces with green highlights, porosity. Fine. Extremely rare variety of an already rare type.

From the Kelly Ramage Collection.

The island of Imbrus struck a small run of provincial coins during the reign of Augustus but then stopped, not striking again until a series without imperial portraits began in the late second to early third century AD, probably spanning the early Antonine and Severan eras.
