Though dated 1905, this coin was authorized in 1906 and not issued until mid-1907. Intended to replace the earlier Vietnamese and Chinese cash circulating in the reason, the zinc composition made these coins unsuitably fragile for the environment of Vietnam, with many quickly corroding or breaking. Only 6,160,200 of the original mintage of 53,839,800 were ever issued. The type is the sole issues for the Protectorate of Tonkin and was demonetized in 1914.
