Al-Jalali Fort was constructed as Forte de São João by Philip I of Portugal in the 1580s to protect the Portuguese spice trade. In the 1620s, local resistance to the Portuguese began to coalesce around Nasir bin Murshid, who drove them from all but the city of Muscat and the fort. The town was ultimately captured by his successor, Sultan bin Saif, in 1649.
