Nicephorus Comnenus. Sebastos, circa 1062-circa 1136. PB Seal (29mm, 21.70 g, 12h). 11th-12th Centuries. Half-length facing bust of the Theotokos, orans, with nimbate facing bust of the Holy Infant on breast / + CΦPA/ΓIC CЄBAT,/ KOMNHN(OV)/ NIKHΦO/P(OV) in six lines. BLS (Zacos) –; DOCBS –; BZS – but cf. BZS.1947.2.1093 and BZS.1955.1.2990 (for other seals of Nicephorus Comnenus). Tan surfaces, mark. Near EF. A wonderfully preserved seal. Almost certainly belonging to the Nicephorus Comnenus who was the youngest brother of emperor Alexius I who was first titled a sebastos and later megas droungarios of the Byzantine navy. |
