CARIA, Stratonicaea. Septimius Severus, with Geta as Caesar. AD 193-211. Æ (36mm, 18.86 g, 5h). Damnatio Memoriae. Philon, prytanis. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Septimius, seen from the front, gorgoneion on breastplate vis-à-vis [laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Geta]; c/ms: helmeted bust of Roma within circular incuse, and ΘEOY within rectangular incuse / Hecate standing facing, head left, wearing kalathos, holding patera and torch; at feet left, lighted altar. RPC –. Cf. RPC V.2 Online 73865/73720 (for obv./rev.); CNG E-588, lot 359 (dif. rev. die). For c/ms: Howgego 188 and 536. Red-brown surfaces, roughness, flan adjustment marks, reverse die shift. Good VF. Extremely rare variety, the second known. Portrait of Geta erased, Caracalla’s damnatio memoriae of Geta applied after his murder in AD 211.
