Eagle standing facing on cactus, head right, wings spread, grasping snake in beak and right talon; all atop laurel and oak wreath / Liberty cap; glory of rays in background. BW 258.12; KM 409.2. In 1949, a large number of Mexican pesos dated 1898 Mo were struck at both the Mexico City and, in the United States, at the San Francisco mint, though the later were never issued. The Mexico City coins were sent to China to pay the Nationalist forces fighting the soon to be victorious Chinese Red Army. Originals exhibit an Mo mintmark with the o in line, while restrikes exhibit an o elevated above the M.
