KINGS of PAEONIA. Patraos. Circa 335-315 BC. AR Tetradrachm (22.5mm, 12.73 g, 6h). Damastion mint(?). Bare head (of Patraos?) right / Warrior on horse rearing right, spearing enemy warrior who defends with shield and spear. Paeonian Hoard 77 (same obv. die); Peykov E2265; cf. HGC 3, 148 (for rev. type). In NGC encapsulation 6626759-007, graded XF, Strike: 5/5, Surface: 2/5, edge scuffs. Very rare with this obverse.
The head on the obverse of this particular issue is quite unlike the standard appearance of Apollo on most of Patraos’ issues. Unlike the idealized appearance of the Apollo, wearing a laureate wreath, here the head is bare and has more individualized features. Moreover, the features of this head is paralleled on another rare type where the head is wearing a diadem (see Peykov E2260 and Paeonian Hoard 73), an adornment that would be appropriate for the actual ruler. This suggests that, rather than it being a portrait of Apollo, it is, in fact, the portrait of Patraos himself (it is identified as such in the Paeonian Hoard and Peykov).
