MACEDON, Thessalonica. Augustus, with Divus Julius Caesar. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ (20mm, 7.05 g, 6h). Bare head of Divus Julius right / Bare head of Augustus right. Touratsoglou Em. II (of Domitian), 6-38 (uncertain dies); RPC I 1555; Varbanov 4152. Dark green patina with earthen red highlights. Good Fine.

Ex Roma E-Sale 47 (28 June 2018), lot 446.

The dating of this issue is contested, with various numismatists dating it either to the reign of Augustus or Domitian. Touratsoglou interpreted this issue as a restitution issue struck during the reign of Domitian, but countermarks found on the coins suggest a much earlier date (RPC p. 298; Howgego, notes to 702 and 705).

Closing Date and Time: 18 December 2024 at 11:22:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
