CYPRUS, Salamis (or Kition). Evagoras II(?). Circa 361-351 BC. Æ (12mm, 1.12 g, 7h). Lion couchant left / Horse grazing left. Destrooper –; McGregor –; Zapiti & Michaelidou –; Tziambazis Supp. 34. Rough dark brown surfaces. VF. Extremely rare.
This rare issue was unknown to McGregor, but is undoubtedly linked to the lion walking / horse standing bronzes that have traditionally been attributed to Salamis. McGregor questions the attribution to Salamis, where she argues it could belong to Nikokles or Evagoras II, but also suggests this may be an issue from Kition (a sentiment also reflected in Tziambazis).
