The Pompeians. M. Porcius Cato. Spring 47- Spring 46 BC. AR Denarius (16mm, 3.66 g, 11h). Utica mint. Draped bust of female (Roma?) right / Victory seated right, holding patera and palm frond over shoulder. Crawford 462/1c; CRI 46; Sydenham 1052; Porcia 9; RBW. Lightly toned, a few light scratches. Near VF.

One of the more interesting variations of Roman celator engraving style is this reverse composition of the wings of Victory. First engraved with a continuous line, the lines were then superimposed with tiny dots to add a rather three dimensional aspect. The toning on this example serves to highlight this particular approach to the engraving.

From the Mesogeios Collection, purchased from Numismatica Varesina.
