MESSENIA, Mothone. Geta. As Caesar, AD 198-209. Æ Assarion (21mm, 4.27 g, 2h). Struck circa AD 198-205. Bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Two figures standing facing each other. BCD Peloponnesos 813.2; NCP p. 69; BMC –. Earthen brown patina, roughness, deposits. Fine. Extremely rare.

BCD describes the reverse as “Asklepios and Hygieia standing facing in distyle temple” but subsequent specimens have raised doubt on that description. None of the expected attributes for those deities have been confirmed nor is there evidence of a temple on the other examples. Unfortunately, a high grade specimen has not been found to accurately identify the reverse scene with any certainty.

Closing Date and Time: 3 April 2024 at 11:39:20 ET.
