ROMAN. Provincial. Lot of nine (9) River-god themed provincial coins, Asia Minor and Syria. All coins:
1) BITHYNIA, Tium. Geta. AD 209-211. Æ (26.5mm, 12.82 g, 12h). AYT K Π CЄΠ [ΓЄTAC AYΓ], laureate head left / TIANΩN ΛAΔΩN, River-god Ladon reclining left, holding branch and cornucopia, resting elbow on urn from which water flows. RG –; RPC –; SNG BN –. Unpublished. Rough green and red patina. Fine. Extremely rare. The only other known appearance of Ladon in Tium is on a unique coin of Marcus Aurelius, half a century earlier.
2) SELEUCIS and PIERIA, Antioch. temp. Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ Trichalkon (22mm, 6.65 g, 12h). P. Quinctillius Varus, legatus Augusti pro praetore. Dated year 27 of the Actian Era (5/4 BC). Laureate head of Zeus right / Tyche, turreted and veiled, seated right on rocky outcropping, holding palm branch; at feet, river-god Orontes swimming right; ZK (date) in right field. McAlee 87; RPC I 4252. Brown patina, edge flaw. Fine. Rare.Purchased from Wayne Sayles, November 2001.
3) COMMAGENE, Samosata. Lucius Verus. AD 161-169. Æ (22.5mm, 8.32 g, 1h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Tyche, veiled and turreted, seated left on rocks, holding poppy and two ears of grain, resting foot on river-god Euphrates swimming left. Cf. RPC IV.3 Online 11047. Brown patina, light roughness and earthen highlights. Fine.
4) CAPPADOCIA, Tyana. Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. Æ (21mm, 8.37 g, 12h). Dated RY 19 (AD 155/6). Laureate head right / Tyche, veiled and turreted, seated left, holding ears of grain and bunch of grapes, resting foot on river-god Euphrates swimming left; Tyche’s seat decorated with a griffin; ЄT ΘI (date) across field. Ganschow, Münzen 1020; RPC VI.3 Online 5741. Red-brown surfaces, porosity. Fine.
5) SELEUCIS and PIERIA, Antioch. Severus Alexander. AD 222-235. Æ Tetrassarion (26mm, 8.68 g, 6h). AVT KAI M AY CЄO AΛЄΞANΔPOC, laureate bust right, slight drapery on shoulders / ANTIOXЄΩN MH KO, Tyche seated left on rocks, holding grain ears; at feet, half-length figure of river god Orontes swimming left; Δ-Є/S-C across field. McAlee 847 var. (legends); RPC VI Online 30598 var. (same). Red-brown surfaces, porosity, deposits. Near Fine. Very rare variety, unpublished.
6) SELEUCIS and PIERIA, Antioch. Severus Alexander. AD 222-235. Æ Octassarion (33mm, 18.45 g, 5h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind; uncertain c/m in round incuse / Tyche, turreted and veiled, seated left on rocks, holding grain ears; at feet, half-length figure of river god Orontes swimming left; to left, crescent; above, ram leaping left, head right; Δ-Є/S-C across field. McAlee 825b; RPC VI Online 8085. Red-brown patina, roughness, pitting. Fine.
7) SELEUCIS and PIERIA, Antioch. Trebonianus Gallus. AD 251-253. Æ Octassarion (30mm, 19.95 g, 5h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Tyche, turreted and veiled, seated left, with river-god Orontes at feet, within tetrastyle portable shrine, carry-bars at base of shrine; above, ram leaping right, head left; Δ-Є across upper field. McAlee 1181; RPC IX 1851. Red-brown patina, some roughness. Near VF.
8) MESOPOTAMIA, Edessa. Elagabalus. AD 218-222. Æ (25.5mm, 13.08 g, 12h). AYT K M A ANTΩNЄINOC, laureate and cuirassed bust right, seen from the front / MAP AYP [ANTΩ ЄΔЄCCA] (or similar), Tyche, turreted and veiled, seated left on rocks, holding grain ears, before; Nike crowns her with a wreath; below, river-god Orontes swimming left. RPC –; BMC –. Red-brown surfaces, minor deposits, flan preparation marks. Near VF. Rare and unpublished.
9) COMMAGENE, Samosata. Elagabalus. AD 218-222. Æ (27mm, 14.50 g, 11h). Laureate bust right, slight drapery on shoulder / Tyche, turreted and veiled, seated left on rocks, holding eagle and grain ears; below, river-god Orontes swimming left.
