Yakub Beg was an officer in the Khoqand Khanate during a turbulent period in Central Asian history in the latter part of the 19th century. Amidst both internal strife within the Khanate and external conflict with neighboring regions, Yakub raised an army and moved east into Chinese territory. However, Chinese authority in the region was at the time being challenged by the Dungan Revolt. Amidst the tumult in Xīnjiāng, Yakub ultimately took the bastion of Kashghar. From there, he went about fighting and allying with various Kyrgyz and Dungan forces as he expanded his newly-created fiefdom. Yakub entered into treaties with various foreign states at his pleasure, and struck his coins in the name of the Ottoman sultan Abdülaziz in an attempt to protect his new state from Russian encroachment or Chinese reconquest. Ultimately, Yakub Beg’s small state in Xīnjiāng collapsed after his death and its territory was retaken by Qing forces.
